The recording of this session is available online – FSDB Alumni Panel on Vimeo.

At this time in the world of education, there are many opportunities. It is important to investigate all options and make the best decision for each child throughout their educational careers. Luckily, we have the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) process and document which allows for course change on an annual basis. Finding the best fit for the child and family can be done at different times, for different reasons, over the course of a student’s educational experience.

We are pleased to announce that regional Usher Syndrome Screening trainings will be held this fall. In accordance with 6A-6.03013 (6), Florida Statutes, (F.S.), screening for Usher Syndrome must be administered to each student who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing at least once during grades 6-12. We are offering training for a uniform screening process for all districts in Florida. After these initial trainings, online modules will become available to these trainers to train others in the district.

Early diagnosis of Usher Syndrome is very important. The earlier parents and school personnel know that a child has Usher Syndrome, the sooner that child can begin special education training programs to manage the loss of hearing and vision.

These sessions are being offered across the state to provide Florida school district personnel training on how to screen for Usher Syndrome. Trainings will be interactive, informative, and provide time for hands-on practice using the screening tools. There is no registration fee and school districts will be reimbursed for mileage over 50 miles round-trip for up to three (3) participants per district. Additional participants from each district will be at the district expense. Participants will receive the Florida Usher Screening manual and screening tools.

Please register for the training nearest you.

This year we created two technology new policies for students. We combined sign off forms, rules, and expectations for care and responsibility into one single policy. We also added information about our Internet Safety curriculum. This policy is the Student Internet Safety and Technology Use policy.

A team also worked together to develop a policy related to students’ use of personal electronic devices. This policy sets rules and expectations, and also allows for school-related special projects. The policy related to student personal devices is called Appropriate Use of Personal Portable Electronic Devices at FSDB.

Parents and students are receiving these two new policies the first week of school. You can download and review these policies on the Student Permission Forms webpage.
